LTC Maurice M. Kessler, USA (Ret), 88, of Roanoke, Va., went to rest with his Lord on Monday, December 29, 2008. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Wenona Wheeler Kessler; and his parents, W.F. and Lula Kessler.
A 1939 graduate of William Fleming High School, he was currently a member of the Golden Colonels. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
Maurice received his bachelor's degree from Roanoke College. During World War II, he served in the United States Army, graduating in 1967 from the Command and General Staff College, later retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Army Reserve. He worked with the U.S. Postal Service until 1973.
Upon that retirement, he obtained his MBA from Lynchburg College. Soon thereafter, he started a career with the Department of Social Services in Botetourt County from which he retired as eligibility supervisor at the age of 79.
In July of 1970, he joined the Rotary Club of North Roanoke, serving as President from 1976 to 1977. In Rotary District 7570, he served as District Governor from 1983 to 1984. Maurice was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International and currently was a member of the Rotary Club of Roanoke.
Mr. Kessler was a longtime member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church. He loved woodworking and created many fine furniture pieces. Memorials may be made to Huntington Court United Methodist Church, for God's Update '08, P.O. Box 5066, Roanoke, Va. 24012.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, grandsons, great-grandson, and special friend.
The cryptside service will be held 3 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2009, at the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Russell Cheatham will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.
