Chico Enterprise-Record, Thursday, May 28, 1998, pg 7C: Ewin England – Durham – A memorial service for Ewin G. England, 93, of Durham, will be held at 10 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Durham. He died Friday, May 22, 1998, at a Chico hospital.

England was born Jan. 14, 1905, in Texas. England came to California with his family as a child. He was a graduate of Sutter High School. He attended the College of the Pacific in Stockton, and later received his bachelor's degree from Chico State College. He has resided in Durham since 1929, when he became the teaching principal of Durham Elementary School. He retired in 1963.

He was an active person in community affairs, and was a charter member of the Durham Chapter of Rotary International and served as president of that organization. He also served a term as president of Northern California Elementary School Principal's Association. For many years he was manager of the Gold Lake Y Camp sponsored by the Oroville YMCA, and earlier was a Durham Boy Scout leader.

An accomplished musician, England directed school orchestras and participated in the Chico Symphony Orchestra, serving as first violinist for two years, shortly before World War II. He also participated in the Paradise Symphony and in many string ensembles over the years, including a group that played regular weekly concerts for KHSL in the late 1930s.

England was also an avid black and white photographer and an active member of the Kamera Kranks in the 1930s and early 1940s. His photographs often circulated throughout the country in organized photographic exhibits. He loved the out of doors, fishing, camping, birding and botany. He was also an accomplished wood worker. His wife Frances died in 1947; his second wife Mabel died in 1995.

Survivors include a brother, Everett Edward of Chico; a son, David Marshall of Sonoma; a daughter, Alice E. Smith of Sutter County; and four granddaughters and 29 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Durham Fire Department in care of Brusie Funeral in Chico.
