Son of William R. and Mary Elizabeth Williams Chalk. Father of nine children.
October 17, 1842, Chalk enlisted in Bell's Texas Mounted volunteers and participated in the ill- fated Mier Expedition.He and a man named St. Clair were the only men who escaped when the Texans surrendered to the Mexicans on Christmas day of 1842. On August 5, 1844, he was commisioned Major of the Second Regiment, First Brigade, Militia of the Republic of Texas, by President Sam Houston.
Married Mary Fleming August 9, 1847.
Aug 7, 1848 elected first Sheriff of the newly created Williamson County. 1873 he built the first schoolhouse in Lampasas County.
