Anthony Allegro was born in Italy. He settled in Bayonne where he became a dress manufacturer. He went missing on August 13, 1954, after traveling to New York to pick up a check for $1,500. He was found by his son-in-law in a Florida Hospital after the family received a letter with the "tip" he was in Florida. The family also received an anonymous telephone call saying the letter was fake and Allegro was in Florida. After his return to New Jersey, he was placed in the hospital where he died on August 27, 1954.

Police Seeking Missing Bayonne Manufacturer
Went to New York to Collect Check, Not seen since

A 13-state police teletype alarm is out today for Anthony Allegro, 47 year old Bayonne dress manufacture who disappeared Friday after collecting a $1,500 check in New York from a business associate.

Allegro, who resides at 85 Lexington Avenue, was last seen by his wife, Mary, Friday at 7:30 am when she took her husband to work at his plant, 15 Wilkinson Avenue, Jersey City.

Mrs. Allegro fears that her husband may be an amnesia victim.

"He never, never left home like this before," she said, "He wasn't a drinking man and he never gambled. If he could call me, I know he would. He had a lot of worries and his mind may have snapped."

Police said that Allegro left his Jersey City factory at 11 am and went to New York where he collected a check for $1,500 from a Max Siegel at 505 8th Avenue. Police could not determine whether the check was cashed because the banks were closed over the weekend and Allegro was not missed until Friday night. Siegel was reported to have seen Allegro between noon and 1 pm Friday.

Employes of the dress factory could not furnish any clues beyond stating Allegro did not look too good to them when last seen.

He is five-feet, three-inches tall, weighs 150 pounds, has brown eyes and brown hair and is of stocky build.

The missing man is said to have cataracts in both eyes. He also has four scars under his chin.
