Laura S. Garrett, 89, of Sanford, Florida, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City, Florida. She was born in Sanford, Florida, January 3, 1923 to early Sanford celery farmers, Otto and Hester Geer Schmehl.
A lifetime resident of Sanford and Daytona Beach she was a 1940 graduate of Seabreeze High School, Daytona Beach, and attended Florida State College for Women. She and her late husband, Joe owned and operated Garretts Department Store in downtown Sanford for 50 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Mary.
Laura was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Garrett; sisters, Mary Straub, Lois Butner, Julia Neilson and her grandson, Joshua Garrett.
She is survived by 1 son, Otto (Pam) Garrett of Sanford; 1 daughter, Laura Jo(Jerry) Schwalm of Deltona; 1 grand-daughter, Sara Garrett and her mother, Myriam of Sanford and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside funeral services will be 11 A.M. , Saturday June 2, 2012 at Evergreen Cemetery, 1975 W. 25th St., Sanford with Rev. Hugh Lackey officiating. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Mary, 128 Wilbur Ave., Lake Mary, Fl 32746.
