Teen killed in head-on crash
A Laurel County teen died instantly in a head-on-collision on East KY 80 early Saturday evening.
Jason Scott Lawson, 19, the son of Ronnie and Sherry Lawson of 936 Sasser Road, was pronounced dead at the scene by Doug Bowling, Laurel County deputy coroner.
Lawson was driving west on KY 80 eight miles east of London when he lost control of his black Ford Ranger after rounding a curve on the wet pavement, according to Laurel County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Hamblin.
The Ranger slid into the path of a black Jeep Comanche, driven by 36-year-old Hubert Younts of Corbin, Hamblin said. Younts was taken to Marymount Medical Center with multiple injuries, and was listed in stable condition Monday afternoon.
The two vehicles landed tightly together in a ditch and had to be pulled apart before rescue workers could free Lawson.
The 5:45 p.m. crash caused the road to be blocked for almost two hours.
Hamblin stated that the wet road was a factor in the crash, but was unable to determine at the time if excessive speed contributed.
Lawson, however, was not wearing a seatbelt.
There was no evidence of alcohol or other drugs.
Lawson graduated from North Laurel High School last year and played baseball for the Jaguar's.
Monday night's game against Lynn Camp was called off so that team members could attend the visitation.
Assisting Hamblin at the scene were Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County; Laurel County Rescue Squad; Bush Volunteer Fire Department; Sheriff's Det. Richard Dalrymple; Sgt. Eddie Sizemore; deputies Glen Bunch, Albert Hale, Don Minton, Greg Poynter, E.R. Rudder, and Jerry Owens; and Kentucky State Police Trooper Jason McCowan.
