Veteran Civil War, 13th Kansas Regiment, called to Westport in August 1863. Abraham Lincoln ask Russel to hold his coat in Atchison, Kansas, during Ab's speech against (stoning) Steven Douglas, when he was running for President.

Russel's occupation; A sucessful Farmer in Atchison County, Kansas from 1857-1895 (160 acres), blacksmith. Veteran Civil War, Union Army, 13th Kansas Infantry, and was called to Westport (Kansas City MO.) in August 1863. The 1880 census notes Carrie her parents being born in Tennessee. Carrie's father was a wagonmaster also known as a freighter on the Santa Fe Trail. Russel had his right side of his body burned in an accident when a small child. He was a great creator with metals, wood or whatever he had to work with. He was quite talented blacksmith. Russel was a devout Christain. Russel had the honor to meet and get to know Abraham Lincoln. In 1858 Abraham Lincoln was at Atchison, Kansas giving speeches for his election against Steven Douglas. Abraham handed his coat to Russel and said " here Russel hold my coat while I stone Stephen." He had been in feeble health several months before his death.
He had nine children.
