Howard R. Warren, 89, of Portsmouth, VA, passed away on February 4, 2019, at home with his loving wife, Norma, by his side.

Howard was born in Portsmouth in 1929. He is survived by his wife, Norma Cline Warren, his sons, Michael R Warren of Asheville, NC, and Russell H. Warren of Portugal, his sons-in-law Leonard Setterlund and Bruce Joffe, and his sister Helen Tuttle and her husband William Tuttle of Fairfax, VA; stepson Timothy James and wife Nancy grandchildren Brandon James and wife Kirstin, Brett James and Blake James, Great granddaughter Annalee James. Howard was predeceased by his wife Doris Purser Warren, and by his parents Clarence and Helen Warren.

Howard's career focused on the support and evolution of US Navy defense systems. A self-trained and professionally certified engineer, he was not only a supervisor, manager, and leader, but also a mentor, teacher, and model who provided unique insights into the array of problems and issues ranging from engineering to leadership to politics. He was a charter member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Portsmouth.

For years, Howard was an active member of the Orchid Society and the Camellia Society, reflecting on two of his favorite hobbies. Howard also enjoyed music, especially opera, as well as graphic arts. He was also an avid supporter of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, having served on the board, and the Portsmouth Historical Association, as well as other local organizations.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 8, 2019 from 6-8 PM at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, 5685 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk, VA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 9, 2019, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 4811 High Street West, Portsmouth, VA, followed by a brief service at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk, VA.
