Katherine was one of 12 children born to Abigail Ayers Smith and Stephen Smith, Sr. They were all born in Groveport, Franklin County, Ohio.

She married Herbert A. Newcomb in Livingston, Montana on 8 Dec 1903 in the Methodist Church; her brother Rev E. Smith, pastor of the church, performed the ceremony, assisted by Rev. R. P. Smith of Helena. Katherine's sister Amy Smith was her attendant; Claude Morris was the groomsman. They honeymooned via train to Butte, MT, and on to Ohio. When they returned they resided in a newly purchased home on Callender Street in Livingston, MT.

Herbert was listed on the 1910 census as a carpenter.

Newcombs moved about 1914, probably to Philadelphia. Katherine was still living there in 1953. She and Herbert had one son whom they named Smith Newcomb.
