Mary Grier was born on Jul 14, 1871 in Henry County, Illinois and died Apr 7, 1954 in South Sioux City, Dakota County, Nebraska at the age of 82.

She was the third wife of Albert Miner Chambers, her first cousin. They were married on Mar 11, 1890 in West Point, Cuming County, Nebraska. He was born on Jan 29, 1858 in Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa and died Apr 15, 1927 in Walthill, Thurston County, Nebraska at the age of 69. Her second husband was Floyd G. Halstead, whom she married on June 1, 1931 in Oroville, California..

The Beemer (Nebraska) Times carried an announcement of their marriage in its Mar 14, 1890 edition. It stated:

"A.M. Chambers, of this place, and Miss Grier, of Schuyler, were married last week. We could not say where by or whom as it has been impossible to corner the happy groom long enough to find out anything farther than that the lady's name was Grier, and this information was caught on the fly.

"Tuesday morning Mr. Chambers came into town and purchased a box of Pure Havanah Cigars at Dutcher's --jumped in his wagon and pulled out for home as fast as horse-flesh could carry him, and this is what the boys heard as he went flying up Main Street. Cigars at Ducher's!! -gars at Ducher's!!! -gars chat -c-h-e-r's!!"

The 1930 census for Nebraska, Thurston County, Merry Precinct, dwelling 23, family 23, enumeration district 87-8, sheet number 2A, enumeration date Apr 5, 1930, lists Mary Chambers, 58, living with her son Edwin, 27 and his wife Marie, 25. Also living with them was Edwin's daughter Goldie, 2, his sister Nellie, 14, his widowed sister Alberta Wilson, 33, and Alberta's daughter Dorothy Wilson, 11. Mary's birthplace was listed as Illinois. Her father's birthplace was listed as Ireland, and mother's birthplace Virginia.

Her marriage certificate to Floyd G. Halstead states that he was "of Ingot, Calif" and that Mary Chambers was of Walthill, Neb. H. H. Allen, Pastor of the M. E. Church, officiated. Witnesses were Nellie Chambers and W. W. Halstead.

Mary Grier's obituary was published in the South Sioux City (Nebraska) Star. It stated:

"Services at Walthill for Mrs. Mary Halstead, 82. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Halstead, 82, who died April 7 at her home, 510 Second Avenue, South Sioux City, after a long illness, were held Friday at the Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City.

"Rev. Marcus T. Zill officiated and burial was in Evergreen cemetery at Walthill, with the Racely Funeral home of Walthill in charge.

"Mrs. Halstead was born July 14, 1871, in Henry County, Ia [actually Illinois] and moved to South Sioux City from Walthill. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City.

"Survivors include six daughters Mrs. Herman Dais and Mrs. Alberta Wilson, both of South Sioux City, Mrs. Harry Wilkins of Sioux City, Mrs. William Cornwell of Pender, Mrs. Hans Nelsen of Emerson and Mrs. Ted Maslonka of Waithill; two sons, E.R. Chambers of Staples, Minn., and Dwight Chambers of Walthill, a brother William McRae of Grand Island; a sister, Mrs. Rachel Jones of Omaha; 36 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren."

Her obituary was also published in The Walthill Citizen, Thursday, Apr 15, 1954. It stated:

"Mary Chambers Halstead Former County Resident Buried Friday

"Last rites were held for Mrs. Mary Halstead, Friday, April 9, at the Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. Rev. Marcus Zill officiated.

"Grandsons were pallbearers. They included Raymond Maslonka, Hans Nelson, Geore Van Cleave, John Van Cleave, Glenn Cornwell and Gordon Wilkins.

"Interment was made in the Evergreen cemetery at Walthill, with the Racely Funeral Home in charge.

"Mrs. Mary Halstead Chambers 82, a resident of South Sioux City since 1941, died at her home, 510 Second Avenue, April 7, 1954 after an illness of several years.

"Mrs. Halstead was born July 14, 1871, in Henry County, Ill. She moved to Nebraska at an early age. She was united in marriage to Albert M. Chambers on March 11, 1890. Together, they came to Thurston County as early pioneers of this country.

"To this union 10 children were born: eight of whom survive her. Her husband, Albert, and two daughters, Mrs. Cora Van Cleave and Mrs. Henrietta Garner preceded her in death.

"She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons, E. R. (Pat) Chambers, Staples, Minn, Dwight Chambers, Walthill, Nebr.; six daughters, Mrs. Herman Dais and Mrs. Alberta Wilson of South Sioux City; Mrs. Harry Wilkins of Sioux City, Mrs. William Cornwell of Pender, Mrs. Ted Maslonka of Walthill and Mrs. Hans Nelson of Emerson; two brothers, William McRae of Grand Island, Arthur Grier of Omaha and one sister, Mrs. Rachel Jones of Omaha; besides 36 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends."

Her death certificate, Nebraska state file number 54 00359, listed the cause of death as coronary occlusion and generalized arteriosclerosis, with diabetes mellitus as a contributing condition. Her parents were listed as James Greer and Emma Jenkin.
