History of Bucks County, Pennsylvania: Including an Account of Its Original Exploration, pg 769:

HON. C. S. VANDEGRIFT, JR. of the firm of Thomas & Vandegrift, manufacturers and dealers in lumber, flour, feed, brick, and cement, and dealers in coal at
Torresdale, P.O. Eddington, was born in Bensalem township, August 20, 1839, and is a son of Alfred and Catherine (Gibbs) Vandegrift. His parents were of Holland and English descent. The family have been residents of Bensalem township for many years. Our subject's father was a farmer all his life, and met with success. His family consisted of eight sons and four daughters, ten of
whom lived to maturity and were married. C. S. Vandegrift was a third son. He lived with his parents and attended the common school until he was 13 years of age, when he went to live with his uncle, C. S. Vandegrift, Sr. He clerked in a store and attended academy two years. He subsequently took full charge of the store, his uncle retiring, and continued the business in all nearly twenty-two years. In 1874 he embarked in the lumber business at Eddington, and continued there six years, when he moved his business to Torresdale. The mill business was established here at an early day, but this property came into the possession of the Thomas family over forty years ago, and has been run by them since, until Mr. Vandegrift became a member of the firm. The present managers of the
business have increased it and have met with success. Mr. Vandegrift is a democrat in politics. In 1882 he was elected state senator, and served four years in that capacity, with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of his fellow-citizens. He was married in 1862 to Mary H., daughter of Charles Rowland. She was a native of Chester county, Pa. This union has been blessed
with one child, Frederick B., who is now a custom house broker in Philadelphia. All are members of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Vandegrift has served as
trustee and treasurer of the board of trustees of the church, and also served as librarian in the Sabbath school. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and
a past master of the lodge, and past high priest of the chapter at Bristol. He is a member of St. John Commandery, Knights Templar, of Philadelphia.

OBIT:

Ex State Senator Charles S. Vandegrift, died at his home in Eddington last Saturday morning after a brief illness . The immediate cause of death was pneumonia, although for some time the deceased's health had been impaired by vascular disease of the heart. He contracted pneumonia one of the hot days last week, by laying on the floor in one of the rooms in his house and taking a nap. Senator Vandegrift was one of the best known residents of Bucks County. He was a prominent leader of the Democratic party in the county, and was an active business agent and foremost in masonic work. He was a Past Master of Bristol Lodge No. 25, Free and Accepted Masons, and at the time of his death, was a District Deputy Grand Master, with Lodges of Bucks County and Montgomery County in his jurisdiction. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Farmers National Bank of Bucks County, located in Bristol. Senator Vandegrift was a son of Alfred and Catherine Gibbs Vandegrift, and was born at Eddington on August 20, 1839. He was descended from a Dutch family, which settled in Bensalem Township about 1660 and is still largely represented here. His ancestors were prominent in the Revolutionary War. He was the fourth in a family of ten children, of which he is the last survivor. He was reared on a farm, attended public schools, and later was a student at General Partridge'S Military Academy near Bristol. In 1856, he became a clerk in the store of his uncle Charles S. Vandegrift, at Eddington, and in 1862, he took charge of the store when his uncle retired. Continuing in the store business until 1874, he entered into partnership with J and E Thomas, at Eddington, doing a large business. Senator Vandegrift had a large share in the activities of his community and county. In business circles he was respected for his uprightness and his square dealing. He was an untiring worker and a man of force and energy. He was connected with many local organizations of a business character. He was president of the Doylestown Publishing Company from the day it was founded 1900 to 1904. Senator Vandegrift was married in 1862 to Mary B. Rowland, a native of Chester County, who survives him. Their only son Frederick B., a member of the firm F.B. Vandegrift & Co., Custom House Brokers, died a few years ago.
