AMERICAN CIVIL WAR VETERAN - UNION SIDE
GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC (GAR)
Zachariah Gemmill Stewart was the 7th child of Thomas Harris Stewart and Anne Gemmill. He was named after his mother's brother Zachariah Gemmill, and early resident of Alexandria, PA. His early education was obtained in his native village, but choosing the profession of medicine, he received a medical training under Dr. Trimble, a celebrated physician of Huntington, PA.
In April 1859 he moved to Canonsburg, Washington Co., PA to educate his children. While there he purchased a drug store and kept it up until he died. His death was the result of Typhoid Fever, contracted on the Battle-Field of Gettysburg, where he had gone as a Volunteer Surgeon to help care for the wounded. He was attacked 1 Aug 1863, and suffered until 30 Aug 1863, when he died. He was first interred at Canonsburg in the lower United Presbyterian Church burying ground, but was afterwards removed to Murrysville Cemetery.
He was not only a good physician but also a highly intelligent, public-spirited, upright, religious man - one who had the confidence of all his acquaintance. He was a Presbyterian and for some years served as an elder in the church at Murrysville. After his death his wife Jane in the summer of 1866 moved back from Canonsburg to Murrysville, and died there of pneumonia.
married ca1830 Jane Laird
