"Walter W. Allwardt Dies after Sudden Illness

Walter W. Allwardt, a resident of Chico for the past eleven years, died at the Enloe hospital at midnight Sunday night following an attack of acute appendicitis. The deceased was a native of Iowa and was 39 years old.

Allwardt was widely known in fraternal circles here, having been afflicted with the Woodmen of the World, Fraternal Brotherhood and the Moose lodges.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs Sarah G. Allwardt, and three sons, David, Walter and Boyd Allwardt, all of Chico; his mother, Mrs William Allwardt of Chico; three sisters, Mrs Ida Simmons of Chico, Mrs W.L. Simmons of Oroville, and Mrs J.C. Rhoades of Cayton, Shasta county, and two brothers, H.O. Allwardt of Anderson, a former resident of this city, and C.B. Allwardt of Hayward.

The funeral services will be conducted from the Westfall chapel at 3:30 this afternoon. Rev. Henry A. Hoyt, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Chico cemetery. The pass bearers will be chosen from the membership of the three orders of which the deceased was a member. The services were originally set for 2:30 but postponement was made in order that the Diamond Match employees might attend in a body."


"Last Rites Held for the Late Walter W. Allwardt

Last rites for the late Walter W. Allwardt, who died at the Enloe hospital early Monday morning, were conducted from the Westfall chapel at 3:30 yesterday afternoon. Rev. Henry A. Hoyt, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiated. Burial was made in the Chico cemetery.

During the funeral services, which were attended by the many friends of the deceased, appropriate hymns were rendered by Mrs John Honodel, who was accompanied by Mrs Elizabeth Collett. Many beautiful flowers and floral offerings had been sent by friends. Pall bearers were: H.A. Drane and H. Dickey of the Woodmen of the World: J.B. George of the Moose lodge; Richard Westlake of the Diamond Match company and R. Moody and W. L. Spicer of the Fraternal Brotherhood lodge."


Walter's PARENTS:

Walther's father, William H. Allwardt, (Mar 8, 1856 – Feb 18, 1922) was born in Mecklenburg, Germany on March 8, 1856, the son of John and Heiden Caroline Allwardt. William came to the US when he was 16 years old (about 1872). On 2 January 1877, William became a naturalized citizen of the USA, occupation farmer. For many years William resided in Iowa. In 1881, William married Lizzie Augusta Sander. Walther's mother, Lizzie Augusta Sander Allwardt (Sep 19, 1861 – Nov 2, 1946) was born in Muscatine, Iowa the daughter of Christian Sander (born Dec 25, 1819 in Otkfrazen Kosrich, Hanover, Germany). On May 15, 1859, Christian married Ida Echoff in Sweetland Township, Muscatine, Iowa. Ida Echoff was born March 14, 1839 in Manstate, Holstine, Germany.

Lizzie and William Allwardt had seven children, all born in US, the first five in Muscatine, Iowa, and the last two in Ft Bragg California:

1) Johan Christian Allwardt, born 16 September 1882 in Muscatine; died 13 Apr 13, 1902 in Chico, CA.

2) Walther Wilhelm Allwardt, born 13 January 1884 in Muscatine; died 23 Mar 1923, in Chico.

3) Ida Caroline (Allwardt) Simmons Banta, born 9 December 1885 in Muscatine; died 21 Jul 1945 in San Francisco.

4) Hulda Sophia (Allwardt) Simmons, born 3 April 1887 in Muscatine; died 20 May 1954.

5) Effie Rebecca (Allwardt) Rhoades, born 24 January 1889 in Muscatine; died 3 Oct 1980 in Jackson, CA.

6) Oliver Hemerick.Allwardt, born 26 January 1891in Fort Bragg,CA; died 20 Aug 1966 in Willows, CA

7) Carl Baldwin Allwardt, born 21 May 1892 in Fort Bragg; died 21 April 1971 in Oakland.


BIOGRAPHY:

Walther spent the first six years of his life in Muscatine, until in 1890, the family moved from Iowa to California, settling in the town of Fort Bragg on the north coast of California. Walter became a teenager while living with his family in Fort Bragg. The family moved to Chico, CA in 1899. His father, Mr Allwardt secured a position as gardener of the Bidwell Mansion grounds.


Significant Events during the years the Allwardt family lived in Chico:

1900, Population of Chico was recorded as 4,739.

April 4, 1900. General John Bidwell died and was buried in the Chico Cemetery.

1902, Chico High School was founded.

1905, Annie Bidwell donated 2500 acres of land to Chico to become Bidwell Park.

1905, Street cars started running in Chico.

March 1905, the Majestic Theater on 2d street opened to the public (now know as the El Ray Theater).

March 1905, the Carnegie Library opened at the corner of Salem and West 2d Street.

1913, Enloe Hospital opened.

March 19, 1918, Annie Bidwell died and was buried with her husband in the Chico Cemetery.
