Betsey Mills was born in Marietta in 1853 as Betsey Shipman Gates. When her husband, William Mills, became president of First National Bank of Marietta, Betsey became known as a gracious hostess and a godly woman who would gather friends about her open fireplace and provide comfort and a healing influence upon all who came into her home. She established the Girls’ Monday Club in their home on Fourth Street in 1911. It focused on the welfare of young women in Marietta and maintained classes in household science and art and other practical education. She also worked to establish lunches provided in schoolhouses. The Mills’ home was donated for full use of the club in 1916 and dedicated in the name of Betsey in 1927. --provided by Anna
