Pro football player. He was the son of a Methodist minister and spent his childhood moving around Alabama and Florida with his six brothers and two sisters. After graduating from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, he played football for the University of Alabama. He was picked in the first round of the 1950 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was drafted by the U.S. Army instead. After finishing his hitch with the Army, he played fullback with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL in 1952 and the New York Giants in the NFL in 1953. He was used principally as a punter with the Giants. He and his wife, Fran, then returned to Tuscaloosa to start a family. Butch was an assistant coach for the University of Alabama. In 1957, Butch began his banking career with Birmingham Trust National Bank and remained there for twenty years. During that time he served as the Superintendent of State Banks. He was also executive vice president of the Alabama Bankers Association.
