In a letter written about 1937, to the Rev. Sam West, a cousin in Blair, OK, Zack wrote a short biography [granddaughter's comments added]:

"Born in Montague county Texas, January 2nd 1890 son of Joseph S. and Ann A. [full name: Cynthiana "Anna" Montgomery] West. Attended Grammar school in the country.

"Remained on the farm until about grown.

"Met Martha Elizabeth Williams near Eldorado, Okla. and after whirlwind courtship of four weeks we were married [24 Oct 1909], remained on the farm for two years [in Eldorado, Jackson County, Oklahoma].

"In October 1911 we moved to Stigler, Okla. where I attended High school and majored in music. Taught singing schools for some time in the eastern part of Okla. and Western Arkansas. In the fall of 1915, we moved to East Texas where I attended the Baptist College, in Jacksonville, Texas. At the same time I was instructor of music in the college.

"In September 1916 we moved to Doyle, Tenn. where I was instructor of Music in the Doyle Baptist Junior College, at the same time taking literary work in the college. We remained in Doyle til about November 1917, at which time due to the uncertainties brought about by World War One we moved back to Hartford, Ark., where I worked for the Hartford Music Co. throughout 1918.

"January 1, 1919, we moved to Fort Worth, Texas, at which time we entered the Southwestern Baptist Seminary, remaining there until I graduated from the music department in June 1921. Did evangelistic singing through the summer. September 2st, 1921, we moved to Decatur, Texas, where I was instructor of music in The Decatur Baptist College. In September 1922, I resigned as music Director in the College and moved to Birmingham, Ala. to the Woodlawn Baptist Church were I was Director of Music and Finances for the church.

"In the summer of 1922 I took my masters degree in Music at the University of Chicago."

"Have written some thirty songs and had them published.

"I remained as Director of Music for the Woodlawn Baptist Church to October 1937.

"On May 13, 1929, I accepted a position with the Forest Hill Cemetery Association as book keeper where I am at the present. I am now and have been for some several years Vice President of the company. We are still members of the Woodlawn Baptist Church and I presume that we will be so long as we remain in Birmingham, which very likely will be fore the rets of our lives."

He worked at Forest Hill Cemetery for 39 years, eventually becoming president. He served as president of the Southern Cemetery Association.

While at Woodlawn Baptist Church, he collaborated on writing hymns with a Mr. Bartlett and with Dr. Frank MacDonald, pastor of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
