In November 1915, Loras HEFFERNEN was mentioned in the Independence IA Conservative Newspaper as the winner of a diamond ring in a drawing held at the Parish Hall in Monti IA with the Camelia Concert Company entertaining the locals.

According to the East Buchanan IA School District(Quasqueton & Winthrop) Dollars For Scholars Foundation Scholarship Fund, Loras and Lucinda left $15,000 in their memory with the interest to fund scholarships for students in the East Buchanan School District.

"The HEFFERNENS were in business over 40 years, serving the Winthrop area(Buchanan Co. IA). They were at work six days a week from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM, except for the time Loras spent in World War II." ..Without knowing the connection at the time, I remember Frank and Mary GAFFNEY stopping at their restaurant & gas station in Winthrop off of Highway 20 many times.
