US Diplomat. The nephew of Cyrus McCormick, he graduated from the University of Virginia and joined the family's company manufacturing farm implements, later becoming involved in the grain brokerage business. In 1876 he married Katharine Van Etta Medill, the daughter of Joseph Medill. When Robert Todd Lincoln served as US Ambassador to Great Britain McCormick was his private secretary. In 1901 McCormick was named US Minister to Austria-Hungary, serving until 1902 when he was named Ambassador to Russia. In 1905 McCormick was appointed Ambassador to France, where he served until ill health brought on by his service in Russia forced him to retire in 1907. Robert S. McCormick was the father of Joseph Medill McCormick, and father in law of Ruth Hanna McCormick. He was also the father of Robert R. McCormick.
