College and Professional Football player. He was the MVP quarterback on the Columbia University team that beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl in 1934. That game is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletic upsets of the 20th century as the 18-point underdog Lions shut out Stanford, 7-0. He competed in the first College All-Star football game. He then played one year of pro football in the NFL for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1934. He also played for the Mt. Vernon Cardinals in the AFL in 1936. He was awarded the Silver Star in the Navy for his role in saving the lives of 400 sailors at Okinawa during World War II. In 1963 Cliff was elected to the National College Football Hall of Fame.
