Robert William Rudd, 88, of Sanibel FL and Lexington KY, Professor Emeritus, University of Kentucky, and husband of Martha Cheek Rudd, died on October 23, 2008 at his home in Sanibel. A native of Hopkins County, KY, he was the son of Virgil K. and Ethel E. Rudd.

Educated at Ohio State University and the University of Kentucky, he received a B.S. in Agriculture (with high distinction) 1939, an M.S. in Agriculture in 1941. Following military service, he received a Ph.D. in agricultural economics in 1952 from the University of California, Berkeley.

Called to active duty in the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry in February 1942, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater for three years in the 172nd Infantry Regiment and received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. When released from tour of duty in World War II, he chose to accept an active assignment in the Army Reserves, serving in units in California and Kentucky. Earmarked to age 60, he retired from the Army Reserves in 1979 at the rank of Colonel.

Employed by the University of Kentucky in 1952 as an Assistant Economist in the College of Agriculture, he rose to the rank of Professor in 1957 and taught and conducted research in fields of Agricultural Marketing and Agricultural Policy. In 1963-64 he served as an academic assistant to the president of the University, and in 1964-65 as Acting Dean of the College of Commerce, UK. In 1967 he was named Chairman of the Department of Agricultural Economics. In 1968, Dr. Rudd was appointed as a faculty Member of the University's Board of Trustees for a three-year term. He served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Agricultural Economics for 17 years prior to his retirement at the end of 1984.

He was predeceased by his parents, Virgil K. and Ethel E. Rudd, his sister, Elizabeth Lee Rudd, and his first wife, Betty MacGregor Rudd. In addition to his wife Martha, he is survived by his son, Robert W. Rudd, Jr., Grand Rapids, MI; two daughters, Sally (John) R. Lambert, Sugar Land, TX; Susan E. Rudd, Ft. Myers, FL; three grandchildren, Jeffrey C. Rudd, Jason R. Rudd, and Jessica R. Lambert.
