460 Squadron's Avro Lancaster III (#ND822) bomber aircraft, with an aircrew of seven, took off from RAF Binbrook on a night air operation over the synthetic-oil plant at Merseburg/Leuna in Germany. On its return flight following the operation, ND822's starboard inner engine failed and likely caused the Lancaster to crash near Ludford Magna, taking the lives of the entire crew.
