John was born in Mecklenburg Co. Virginia where he married his wife Mary. Together John and Mary had nine children: Janet, Polly, Betsy, Reuben, Jane, Eleanor, Peggy, John and Nancy. John was a soldier in the Revolutionary War fighting with Torries for the King of England. He moved his family to Jefferson County, Tennessee where the city of New Market is now. Several of his personal papers including doctor's biils, store credit slips and a reciept for the payment of his son Reuben's schooling are owned by the McClung Museum in Knoxville, TN, along with the will of his wife, Mary leaving to their son John Jr. the family plantation.
John and his wife Mary are buried on a hill above the actual Nance family cemetery in Jefferson county,TN with two other graves whose inscriptions have been worn away by time.
