Mary "May Abbey" Abigail Elter was the eldest daughter of Joseph Elter and Annie Jane Henderson Elter. She married Joseph Edward Ryan on December 5, 1897 in New York City. Together they had eleven children - Elizabeth "Lizzie" A. Ryan Honig, Abigal J. Ryan, Joseph Edward Ryan, William F. Ryan, twins Cornelius "Charley" Valentine Elter Ryan and Lawrence J. Ryan, Laurence "Larry" John Ryan, Thomas Daniel Ryan, Anne M. Ryan, Stephan John Ryan, and James Ryan. Three of her children predeceased her - Abigail, the twin son Lawrence J., and James (all of whom passed in childhood).

Mary died at the young age of 40 because of kidney failure, tragically leaving behind her young family of eight children.
