In 1853, he was elected on the Whig ticket as Inspector of the 4th Ward of Pittsburgh.
Died in the Marine Hospital in Allegheny City, PA.

On Friday morning, June 4, James W. Owston, aged 48 years. The friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral this morning at 10:00 a.m. from the residence of Thomas Owston, 97 Fourth Street.
