Born in North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland.

James Wilson Owston was a carpenter by trade but also ran the Owston's Exchange Hotel in Pittsburgh.

In 1853, he was elected on the Whig ticket as Inspector of the 4th Ward of Pittsburgh.

Died in the Marine Hospital in Allegheny City, PA.

On Friday morning, June 4, James W. Owston, aged 48 years. The friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral this morning at 10:00 a.m. from the residence of Thomas Owston, 97 Fourth Street.
