He was instrumental in the organization of Rocky Mount School and was postmaster of the Rocky Mount Post Office. He
owned and operated a farm in Marshall County, Tennessee. He moved his family to Cole County, (later became Miller County) Missouri in 1829. He studied Law and became the Miller County Judge in 1837 and afterward was known as "Judge" Wilkes.
