Mary was the daughter of Harriet (Tidwell) and E. Holdridge Munkus. Her father died about 1883 in Texas and her mother remarried Benjamin Franklin Landreth. Her step-father's son was later to become her second husband.

According to her son (Frank) she was married first to a Mr. Chandler at age 15 and had 3 daughters. Mr. Chandler left her when the oldest girl was 4 yr. and took the 3 girls. She didn't see her daughters for 7 years. Frank could not recall the names of the daughters (his half-sisters) as they had very little contact with their mother.

Mary & James Landreth had 7 children, the youngest died in infancy and Mary & James were divorced in 1917.

After daughter, Eva, died Mary raised her grandson as a son, John Wesley Landreth (1923-1986)
