Papatawa Tragedy
At the inquest yesterday at Papatawa by Mr J. D. Wilson, District Coroner, concerning the death of Charles O'Neil, aged 24 years, who was found hanging in a woolshed on Sunday morning, the mother of deceased gave evidence that she had last seen her son at 9 p.m. on Saturday evening. He had his tea as usual and spent the evening cheerfully with his mother, sister and sister-in-law. He was in good health and had no financial worries. When he failed to arrive at breakfast she went to look for him and found him hanging in the woolshed. Witness could not account for her son's actions in taking his life. About five years ago he had had a fall from a horse and was unconscious for several days. Ir was some time before he recovered from the accident.
Corroborative evidence was given by Catherine O'Neil, a sister and Kathleen O'Neil, a sister-in-law (Kathleen Mary Croul).
The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased committed suicide by hanging.
