SOUTH YARMOUTH — Christos Demetrios "Chris" Alexander, of Dennisport and Yarmouthport, died on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at Windsor Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in South Yarmouth, after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved, loving and longtime companion of Margaret A. "Peg" Burke of Yarmouthport. He was 66 years of age.

The son of the late Sophie and James Alexander of Mytilini, Greece, and Stoughton, Mr. Alexander was born in Attleboro on Jan. 22, 1942, and was raised and educated in Stoughton. He was graduate of Stoughton High School, class of 1960, where he played basketball. He was an active member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Brockton and excelled in classes involving the Greek language, its culture and history. He also played with the church's basketball team during his high school years. He furthered his education at Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Mr. Alexander was employed by two meat processing and distribution centers in the Boston and southern Massachusetts areas. After moving to Dennisport, in the mid-1970s, Mr. Alexander commuted to Somerville, to work as the manager at his brother-in-law's market in Somerville.

Chris retired in 2002, after having been employed for 16 years at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, where he was a friend and mentor to many Cape Tech students. He was also employed by the town of Orleans for nine seasons as a guard, gate attendant and off-road vehicle inspector at Nauset Beach. Mr. Alexander was a dedicated walker and a familiar figure on his favorite routes, that included the Follins Pond areas and Bass River in South Yarmouth, and at King's Way in Yarmouthport. He also enjoyed walking at Mayflower Beach and Chapin Beach in Dennis.

For 10 years, he was accompanied by his beloved golden retriever, Kija, who was especially fond of exploring the Grays Beach and one-lane bridge neighborhoods in Yarmouthport. Much to the chagrin of most of his friends and family, he was a fan of Joe Torre's New York Yankees' teams. He also enjoyed watching the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.

A talented artist and calligrapher, he worked on many projects for his friends and relatives. His handwriting and signature were unique. He spent many hours landscaping at his home, evidenced by the beautiful courtyard he created. He and Peg traveled throughout New England, but he especially enjoyed the trips they took to Nantucket for many years to participate in the annual Christmas stroll.

Chris was a member of the Barnstable County Retirement Association, a retired member of both the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the National Education Association, and the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Cape Cod in Centerville.

In addition to Ms. Burke, Mr. Alexander leaves his sister, Angelica M. Kontos and her husband James N. Kontos; nephew, Nicholas Kontos and his wife Nicole Kontos and their children Dimitri and Lucy; niece, Sandra Kontos, and niece, Anna Seegers and her husband Michael Seegers and their son Theodore. He is also survived by James E. Burke and his wife Beverly and their children Shannon E. Martin, and James P. Burke and Edward M. Burke and his wife Vickie and their children Michael J. Burke and Erin E. Burke. He was a loving and good friend to the late James H. and Evelyn H. Burke. He was the brother of the late William Alexander and his wife Ann, and the late Mary Nestor, whose husband William Nestor survives her.

Chris touched the lives of many people and will be lovingly remembered as a kind, trusted and generous friend.
