Louis Knoff, for many years a prominent leather manufacturer of Gloversville, died suddenly about half-past 11 o'clock Friday night, at his home, No. 149 South Main street, of heart disease. He was well known through the county and his death will be received with deep regret by all who knew him. Louis Knoff was born in Barnstadt, Prussia, January 8th, 1828. He learned his trade in Breslau, Germany. He came to Gloversville in 1849, and was employed by Gilbert Burr, after which he worked in Johnstown for several years. In 1861
he established himself as a manufacturer, having a mill located near the present railroad station. In 1865 he built the present factory and tannery on South Main street, and has succeeded in building up a large and profitable business. In 1856 Mr. Knoff was married to Pauline Gansel, who died in 1862. Mr Knoff was again married in 1866 to Rosa Fliegel, who died about two years ago. He is survived by two sons, Herman and Louis, Jr. Mr. Knoff was for many years a member of the Congregational church of Gloversville.
