Louisa (or Louiza) "Lou" (Bolton/Boulton) Ballard was a daughter of Rev. John Bolton (also spelled Boulton). According to census records she was born in about 1826 in Alabama. Her father was a circuit rider preacher. Lou's mother (name unknown) died when she was young, so she was raised by her father & step-mother, Sarah (Warren) Boulton.

At about age 17, on 20 Sept. 1843, Lou married Joshua Ballard (son of Daniel & Hannah Ballard) in St. Clair County, Alabama. Josh & Lou began their family in St. Clair Co, AL, and in about 1854 they moved to Van Zandt County, Texas, settling just south of Martin's Mill.

The Ballards farmed for a living and continued raising their family near Martin's Mill. Joshua enlisted to fight with the Confederacy during the Civil War, but returned afterwards to continue farming. Josh was also a wheelwright, an accomplished carpenter and was good at building furniture such as chairs.

Louisa Ballard died in 1909, and according to Ballard family members, she was buried at Payne Cemetery, although there is no marker to identify her grave. If anyone knows for certain which is her burial plot, please let us know. Several of her children & grandchildren are also buried at Payne Cemetery.

It is said that Josh Ballard died while visiting his brother in or near Red River County in about 1866. He is said to have been buried there.
