Joseph Marshall attended the local district schools of Marietta, Marshall Co., Iowa, and then took courses at Valparaiso University. When he was seventeen years old he entered the Law Department of the Iowa State University, but after taking the junior course there, he returned to Valparaiso, where he graduated in June 1890, being the youngest in his class. He was at once admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Indiana and the United States District and Circuit Courts. He then returned to Iowa and passed a most rigid examination, after which he was admitted to Supreme Court Practice. Soon afterward he formed a partnership with Byron J. Allen and opened an office in Pocahontas Center, Pocahontas Co., Iowa.
He was married to Maude M. Hoover 4 Oct. 1893 in Pulaski Co.,Indiana. She was born 5 April 1867 in Pulaski Co.,Indiana. She died 5 Oct 1956 in Thief River Falls, Hennepin Co.,MN. She is believed to be buried in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
