Phillip "J.P." was the son of John Sherwood and Sarah Elizabeth "Bingham" Wright. He married (1) Marie Butts about 1915. They had 3 sons who died at birth. He and Marie adopted a daughter, Josephine. Marie died in 1937. In 1943, he married (2) Pattie Arnold Lamb. They had no children. J.P. was a member of a Gospel quartet that sang at many local funerals.
