MARTINSVILLE, VA — Funeral services for Essie Jene Bridges Martin, 1934-2008, will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 8, 2008, in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with Rev. Tracy Freeman officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.

Essie was the beloved wife of Johnny (Shockley) Martin for 55 years and she brought forth into this world two daughters, Connie Hardy Jones and Sandra Martin Forrest, who loved their mother dearly and will forever be in her debt for her perseverance, her strength, her laughter, and her constant love.

Mom was a hard worker at everything she went at and she gave her all for her marriage, her daughters and her grandchildren. To Mom, work was just a means to provide a good life to us.

Chip Hardy, son of Connie Hardy Jones, was her first grandchild for 10 years. Oh how she loved him, words can't express. Then along came her second grandchild, Melanie Jean Forrest, daughter of Sandra Martin Forrest. Melanie was the access for Essie to relive her young life, through styles, trends, school, and life in general. Again, how she loved her, words can't express.

Those outside the family who knew Mom can honestly say she was a strong, driven woman who loved her family and protected them with a "vengeance". She was a fair and smart business woman, and she believed in providing excellent customer service to her clients.

Mom never finished high school, but you would never know it. She taught us you have to work for anything you get, that life is not a free ride, life is not always fair, and that treating people as you would want to be treated is the only way to live. Mom was so proud when I graduated from high school, but she really gleamed as I progressed through the business world loving my work and making excellent benefits. And when my sister not only graduated from high school, but also college, and then went back for a Masters Degree, it was like her world was justified.

It was important to Mom that her grandchildren graduate from college. The grandson already has and the granddaughter will next year. Mom attended every school event for her grandchildren up until her health started to leave her.

When Mom discovered cancer in her body, she knew her chances were slim but she was willing to suffer through the chemotherapy and radiation, and then the gamma knife surgery. Alas, the treatments were not successful but allowed us a little more time together. During her last days all her family were around her bedside, along with special friends, Hazel Duncan and Jason Wyatt. Although she was not in much pain, she was in and out and we were able to communicate some. Her death came with peace and dignity and I know she is in Heaven with her mother.

I would especially like to thank Sarah Webster, Hospice Nurse, for her compassion and tender care of my mother. I want everyone to know this world lost a wonderful person, wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be missed.

She is survived by her husband, John Martin; daughters, Connie Jones and Sandy Forrest; and grandchildren, Chip Hardy and Melanie Forrest.
