"Babe" is her nickname. Her first name was Mildred.

Mildred received her nickname from being the youngest of four children. She married George Saportas, a steeplechase jockey and horse trainer, in 1926. No children were born of this union.

Mildred began exercising and training horses for hunt races in her teens. After her marriage to George, she began working at the racetracks where women trainers were virtually unheard of.
