Norman "Skip" Wendell Kieffer, 67, of Osmond died April 13, 1990 in the Star Valley Hospital form congestive heart failure.
Funeral services were conducted April 16 at the Osmond LDS Ward Chapel. Interment was in the Afton Cemetery.
Skip was born April 16, 1922 in Casper WY. He was the youngest of six children of Michael Finley and Orpha May Hill Kieffer. His parents homestead was in Edgerton 46 miles north of Casper. When Skip was in eighth grade his family moved to the Nield place in Moran by Jackson Hole and ran a hunting camp. His father died of a heart attack shortly thereafter.
His family moved to LaBarge and bought the LaBarge Inn which his mother ran for several years. Skip moved back to Casper to live with a married brother when he was in 10th grade. This was the end of his formal education. He started to work in the gas fields and later met his sweetheart Margie. He married Margie Welch Sept 25, 1941 when he was 19 years old. Skip worked for Joe Minton in gas and oil fields and for Western Oil Co. Then on april 4, 1944 he was drafted into the Air Force where he trained as a mechanic for B-24s B-36s and B-29 bombers. He was stationed in Biloxi MS and later int he Philippines and Manila. He was honorable discharged Nov 11, 1946 and moved to LaBarge to live.
Skip was deputy sheriff for Lincoln County for 11 years. He worked under sheriffs Ellsworth, Braegar and Roberts. He worked for Stanlin Pipeline oil fields for 13 years, Belco for 12 years, and Gary energy for 10 years before retiring to Star Valley.
After moving to their Osmond home, his wife Margie lost her battle to cancer and died July 2, 1986. While living in Osmond, Skip served on the senior citizen's board.
Skip was an avid fisherman and a good hunter. For the last 40 years he spent every summer with family and friends camped up North Cottonwood. He was also an excellent bowler. He competed in league play and only missed one pin to bowling a perfect 300 game.
Skip will always be remembered as a gentleman. He was a very honorable and law abiding man, always obeying all the game and fish laws. He was a man of his word. Skip had a way of saying things with a flavor that delighted everyone.
Survivors include his daughter Debar Ann Volkoff, grandchildren Shauna and Michelle Volkoff, Osmond, grandson Brandon Day, Smoot, and brother Michael Kieffer, Berago, CA.
Her is preceded in death by his wife Margie Welch Kieffer, three brothers and one sister.
