Born March 1, 1894 at North Ogden, Utah
Died May 11, 1948 at Ogden, Utah

The only boy in the family of six children, he grew up loving music. He played the piano well and the trombone. He had a nice singing voice—he loved to sing in the choir and in quartets. He and Una sang duets for many occasions. He was raised in a faithful Latter-day Saint home. He was two years old and his sister Mabel six when his father was called to serve a two-year mission to England. Gilbert himself served his mission in the Northwestern States Mission, 1915-1917. Mission headquarters were in Portland, Oregon.

He married his sweetheart, Una Randall, September 12, 1917 in the Salt Lake Temple. They settled in North Ogden where they raised a family of six girls and two boys. Gilbert had attended Weber Academy (high school) in Ogden for four years, and graduated in 1911 in the Commercial Department. He began working on November 1, 1917 as a teller for Commercial Security Bank in Ogden shortly after his marriage and worked there until his death, a little over thirty years. In addition to his work at the bank, he “kept books” for several people, including Clix (Clarencce Swaner), owner of Clix’s Service Station. Also, he and Una had a small farm on their half-acre where they had all kinds of fruit trees, berries, a large vegetable garden, one or two cows, chickens, a pig. They loved getting together with their “gang” of ten or so other couples for dinners, games of Rook, picnics with their families.

He loved North Ogden and considered it an ideal place to raise a family. He was a leader in his community and worked hard for incorporation of the town to be able to obtain water rights. He was the first mayor of North Ogden, and served as mayor for ten years. He was active in the church as well, serving in many callings, including counselor to Bishop Fred Barker for five years and veil worker in the Salt Lake Temple. He served on the high council for eleven years, and was high councilor chairman of genealogical activities for Ben Lomond Stake when he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of fifty-four. Gilbert had enjoyed excellent health all his life. Therefore, his death on May 11, 1948, after five days at Dee Hospital was a shock. The cause was “labor pneumonia due to rheumatic and bacterial endocarditis.”
