The last President of the Texas Veterans Association, died 1908 age 89 in Rockport,TX.

Stephen Franklin SPARKS was one of the Veterans who was escorted on a tour of the San Jacinto Battleground by members of San Jacinto Chapter/Daughters of the Republic of Texas in 1894 for the purpose of describing in detail what took place during the battle. A photo of these Veterans was taken by a Houston Photographer,Samuel Anderson and exist in Briscoe Library.

STEPHEN FRANKLIN SPARKS was born at Big Spring,Lawrence County, Mississippi, April 7, 1819. His Father was: Richard Sparks who served in the War of 1812.(SPARKS, Richard 13 REGT (Nixon's) Mississippi Militia Ensign Roll Box 196 Extraction # 602)
His Mother was Elizabeth May Cooper


Stephen was in his early teens when his Father moved the family 1st to San Augustine County in 1834, moving on to settle land North of Nacogdoches. Stephen's father, Richard Sparks Application for Citizenship was dated Jan. 24, 1835.

Stephen's Father,Richard Sparks was killed by Indians on Pin Oak Creek, in what is now Navarro Co, Texas in April, 1838.



In Service Record No. 4686 signed at Harrisburg April 8, 1836, it is certified that S. F. Sparks entered service at Nacogdoches March 8, 1836. On April 8th they were ordered to report to the Commander-in-Chief of the Army. They enlisted in Captain Hayden Arnold's "Nacogdoches Company," April 12, 1836.

October 6, 1836,married Emily Beauchamp Whitaker.They were the parents of 7 children.


May 4, 1846,Stephen F. Sparks used Donation Certificate No. 11, for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto. An act of the Legislature, approved September 1, 1856, appropriated 640 acres of land to him for having participated in the Storming and Capture of Bexar, December 5 to 10, 1835.


1854, Stephen Franklin Sparks, moved his family to McLennanCounty, Texas where his wife Elizabeth died in childbirth.

April 14, 1856 he married 2nd time to Jane M. Jurney.

1890,Stephen moved to Aransas County, Texas

**Stephen Franklin Sparks served in the TEXAS REPUBLIC ARMY/2nd Regiment Volunteers 1st Infantry Company under CAPTAIN: Hayden Arnold.
