Gertie was born to Joel Campbell Lyon and Sarah Hedrick in Martin County, IN. She firstly married Harry Dew in 1904 and had three daughters, but mostly lived with her father. After a divorce, Gertie lived for a time with her sister, Sarah. She secondly married Chauncey Marcrum in 1918, but he passed away shortly after their marriage. She thirdly married Andrew Taylor Barbee in 1920.

After Gertie's daughter, Mabel, married Stanley "John" Sysol, she went with them to Alamogordo, New Mexico. It has been said that she eventually moved to El Paso for her health. She passed away in El Paso.

The US Veteran's Administration has Grace Barbee listed as the unknown relationship to Stanley J Sysol; MSGT US ARMY World War II, Korea 04/05/1911 - 06/19/1960. He is buried at Fort Bliss National Cemetery Section D, site 444. He is at FAG memorial #3331463

Gertie's relationship to Stanley "John" Sysol is that of mother-in-law. Attempts to have this relationship changed at the VA have so far been unsuccessful.
