John Zachariah "Zac" Smith was the youngest of eleven children born to Thomas Thornburg Smith and Catharine Geary Smith in Wells County, Indiana near Bluffton. Around 1870, Zac moved to Bonham, Texas along with older brothers, Lucas and Joseph. His brother Lucas practiced law in Fannin County and was elected to the Texas Supreme Court bench in 1878.
Lucas moved to California in 1888; while Zac and his brother Joseph remained in Bonham. Both Zac and Joseph are buried in Willow Wild Cemetery.

The brother's grandmother, Mary Penn Smith, was the great great granddaughter of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania.
