Viola was the seventh child born to Rachael and William MC Alexander. When she was 3 years old, her father died. Her mother remarried in 1886 and then died in 1892 when Viola was 18 years of age. She remained living with her stepfather and his family. At a young age Viola badly burned one of her hands causing scarring and deformity which she hid the rest of her life. On 13 August 1894 Viola married Charles Jesse Burton in Daviess County, Indiana. They had seven children, Ralph Edward, Edith Mae, Charles Everett, Myrtle Irene, Winifred Martell, Zula Clara and Mary Agnes. Their marriage had many difficult periods. Her husband had tuberculosis and was isolated away from his family leaving her without income and assistance. Their oldest son Ralph drowned while swimming in the White River and the youngest child, Mary Agnes was born with Spina Bifida and died at a few months of age. In 1933, her husband took his own life at their home on Oak Street in Washington, Indiana. Viola continued living in this home until the 1950's when she moved to Toledo, Ohio, to live with her daughter Zula and son-in-law Alfred.
