DEATH: Obituary column, Alamogordo News, July 1941. "Emery Joy, 87, Dies In Auto Accident" - Emery Joy, 87, pioneer resident of this section, was killed early on Tuesday, when struck by an automobile near the home of his foster daughter, Mrs. J. R. Tanner, in Sacramento, Calif. The remains will arrive here on Thursday evening, and funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of Mrs. Tanner, who will accompany the remains. A brother, Ely Joy, of Blue, Arizona, and a nephew, Clifford Joy, and wife of Miamai, Ariz. arrived here to await the funeral. Mr. Joy is survived by three other brothers, and three sisters: Mrs. Helen Boatwright, Kansas City, MO; Mrs. Ellen Liles, Wilmington, Calif; Mrs. Effie Maukford, Roosevelt, Texas; Joe Joy, Los Angeles, Calif.; Lou Joy, Mason Co., Texas; and Doc Joy of Roosevelt, TX. Emery Joy was born in Kimball County, Texas in 1854 and having adopted stock-raising as his life pursuit, came to New Mexico about 1882 and worked for several years for the Terrell Ranch on the Ruidoso. He then returned to Texas and was married to the late Mrs. Joy, a native of California. Mr. and Mrs. Joy moved to the Penasco River vicinity shortly after 1900, and in 1907 moved to Alamogordo, and established a small farm southeast of town. Here they resided until Mrs. Joy succumbed in 1939. Since that time Mr. Joy has resided with his foster daughter, Mrs. Tanner, whom the Joys took in infancy and reared as their own. Theirs was a childless marriage. Mr. Joy has been a peace officer during his residence in the Sacramento Mountains."
