Arthur Berry "Art" Davis, was the seventh of ten children of George Washington Davis and Roxie Ann Newberry. Five of the siblings including his twin, all died young. The first two at birth and the next two, before they were three years old. Art's twin, Arvil, died in 1920 at age 7.

At the time of his fathers untimely death by drowing in 1924, Arthur "Art" was barely 11 1/2 years old. He was then the oldest surviving male child, with one older sister age 14, who was hearing and speech impaired, Two younger sisters, ages 10 and 8 and one younger brother age 6. For the next several years, Art had the responsibility of being the "man of the house" working in the fields and sharecropping to earn money for the family. He had three paternal uncles, all in their early 30's when his father died, but only one Uncle, Charley Davis, who lived in the Sadie area and near enough to be of any support to the family. There was one maternal half Uncle, Ed Daniels, who we know little about and who was probably not much older if any than Art. His Grandfather Newberry had been missing for years and his Grandfather Davis died in 1929. There was no one else to do it, he had to grow up fast.
