Joe was a graduate of Clymer Central School, a veteran of the US Marine Corps, and a former employee of Monofrax until his retirement in 2002 due to disability. In recent years he was very involved in Civil War and WWII history and research. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed all sports. He especially loved spending time with his family at the family homestead "Rhoadeshurst".

He was a member of the French Creek Cemetery Association, Lakewood Rod & Gun, Damcott-Jones American Legion and lifetime member of the NRA. He attended Abbe Reformed Church in Clymer.
