Casualty of the Great War, he was a Captain in the Royal Air Force, 90th Sqdn.

Served also with No. 10, No. 98, and No. 206 Squadrons.

He joined the Middlesex regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant and subsequently transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. He received the Military Cross (MC) in 1917, and in 1918 he received the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). He was later awarded a bar to his DFC and received the Croix de Guerre (Belgium). His five victories qualified him as an ace.
