John G. Mitchell was born in Pittsburg, Penn June 19, 1844 and died after a long and severe illness at his home in Danville township, this county, Aug. 3, 1916, age 72 years, 1 month and 14 days.
At the age of 18 Mr. Mitchell enlisted as a private in Co. G. 15th Regiment West Virginia. He also served in Co. G. 10th Regiment and was a true and faithful soldier until the close of the war.
On the 26th day of December, 1869, he was married to Miss Helen Lohmuller of Baltimore, Md., Rev. C.C. Sturken, the Lutheran minister, performing the ceremony. Mrs. Mitchell was christened and raised in the Lutheran church and has all her life been a faithful member of this church. To this union ten children were born, seven of whom survive their father. Three of the children died in early life. Mr. Mitchell in the year 1880 confessed his savior and united with the church called "The United Brothers." He was a great sufferer and in the year 1908 his suffering was so great he was compelled to have his leg amputated.
When the end came he quietly laid his armor by and sweetly fell asleep.
The funeral services were held at the cemetery Friday afternoon. Aug. 4th, conducted by Rev. R. E. McQuie, and his remains buried in the Montgomery cemetery.
