Burgess M. Avery enlisted as a Private in Company G of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years of service, at Adrian, Michigan. He was a resident of Dundee, Michigan prior to enlisting. Burgess died of disease (Febris Typhoides) at the Regimental Hospital at Miner's Hill, Virginia, on December 27, 1861.
