John was the son of Samuel Walker West and Margaret Cooper and the husband of (1)Betsey Jane Fish and (2) Mary Jane Robinson.

At age 20 with his family, he came across the plains in the Harry Walton/Garden Grove Company. They left the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa [present day Council Bluffs] on 17 May 1851 and arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah about the 25th of September 1851.

John married Betsey Jane Fish on 19 May 1854 in Parowan, Utah. His five children with Betsey Jane were Elizabeth Jane, Margaret Hannah, John Anderson, Jr., Horace Erastus and Sarah Anna plus he and Betsey took in an Indian boy named Manet. He and Betsey later divorced.

John married Mary Jane Robinson with whom he had 11 children: Samuel Ezra, Joseph Anderson, William Heber, Edward Moroni, Amulek Isaac, James Alma, Oliver Robinson, Mary, Robert McCord, Susan and Wilford Cooper.

John died on 28 Sept 1917 of acute obstruction of the bowels with a strangulated hernia at age 86.
