Born Johann Heinrich Depke in Meitze, Hanover, Germany, John Henry immigrated to New Orleans, LA where he was for some years a plantation foreman. In 1846 he purchased Federal land south of Homewood, Rich Township, Cook County, Illinois, the family town of record. He married Sophia Anna Bremer in Cook County, IL prior to 1850. They had at least 12 children but only 5 lived to adulthood. He was a prosperous farmer in Rich Township, his land bordering the Illinois Central Railroad tracks. The 5 living brothers moved to Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois in the mid-1800s.
