Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August 1943, and served in the Sea-Bees in Milne Bay, New Guinea from January 1944 to December 1945

Lee was the eldest of three children. On August 26, 1939 he married Myrtle Edith London at the Wyoming Avenue Christian Church in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The couple raised one son and two daughters. He worked as a carpenter.
