George was one of sixteen children born to William Alpheus Spaur and his wife, the former Temperence Bozarth. His siblings were: Valentine, Mahala, Jacob B., Anthony, Anna, Robert C., John Gilbert, Hezekiah W., Albert, Ezra, Mary Emily, David Creighton, William B., Lot Clinton, and Flora Jane Spaur.

George married (1) Barbara Ann (Graham) Spaur. He married (2)on 12 July 1887 to Elizabeth Oppy Whitlatch, daughter of Mary (Oppy) and John Whitlatch.

Elizabeth was born in 1854 in Marion Co., IA and died in 1945 in Knoxville, Marion Co., IA.
